California dreaming
California - one of the richest and most populated states in the United States - can offer a lot of incredible places to visit. One of them is San Diego. San Diego is the second biggest city in California (after Los Angeles) and it stretches almost to the border with Mexico. Like Los Angeles San Diego unites several communities.
The story of San Diego began in 1542 when Spanish ships moored here. At the time, these areas were inhabited by the Indian tribes. In 1769 Gaspar de Portola became an official owner of the land. In this very year the first European mission in San Diego was founded - it received a name San-Diego-de-Alcala. Later 21 missions were built along the oceanic coast. The famous "Camino Real" (Royal Road) became the starting point.
For a long time this city facing the Gulf was a kind of isolated, its development began only after the World War II. During this war the navy base was built here. A perfect climate and economic rise changed the destiny of San Diego. Nowadays it's a highly developed industrial and port city and its beautiful beaches made it a resort.
The city is divided into 8 districts - Old Town, Downtown, Embarcadero, Balboa park, Coronado, Point-Loma, Mission Bay and La Jolla.
Old town is just a name - the city was destroyed several times. Now it's an elegant district on the hill where the beautiful panorama of the sea and port opens.
Downtown appeared in the end of XIX century when it was decided to develop commerce on the shore (the hill with Old town was situated too far from the coast). For ages it was a district of the sailors and bars. Now it's a place with good shops and restaurants.
Embarcadero is a Spanish name referring to the first settlers of San Diego. This barrio is full of Victorian style houses. It's a perfect place for yacht walks. The pearl of Maritime Museum - sailing ship "Star of India" is moored here.
Coronado is a place of US Navy. Annually marines make avia shows here. In Coronado stands the legendary "Del Coronado" hotel built in 1888.
The city and its suburbs are rich in natural beauties - water, mountains, forests - everything you could imagine!
San Diego boasts one of the three water parks Sea World. Here you can see killer whales, dolphins, skates and other sea creatures.
San Diego Zoo is considered to be one of the biggest in the world. Wild Animal Park lying nearby Bernardo rancho is something between zoo and natural reserve. Safari tour to this place can become an interesting experience.
If you come to San Diego in winter you have a unique opportunity to watch grey Californian whales. Usually you are offered two- or three hours excursion to the ocean where you can contemplate these huge mammals. For your safety it's prohibited to come to the whales closer than 100 meters.
La Jolla is a very picturesque place for wild nature lovers - unusual rocks and fur seals are the main attractions there.
Balboa Park is named the biggest culture park in America. It houses a lot of museums including San Diego Aerospace Museum.
