Avoiding the Big Page Title Mistake
One of the biggest mistakes made by website owners is leaving the titles of the website pages blank or filled with the wrong words.
The page title of any website page is set using the HTML *TITLE* tag. Even if you don't do the programming yourself, you can always check your website pages and have your web designer make the changes for you.
If you want to see an example of the number of website pages that are not named well, then simply take a walk to Google.com and type in the following:
"untitled document" - 11,400,000 results
Staggering isn't it?
But then, you may be wondering what the big deal is. You may not know this but the page title is the single biggest factor to any web page when getting ranked in search engines, as far as internal optimization is concerned. Internal optimization is just the changes that you can control on your own site, such as the content, the keyword density, the page title, the text color, etc.
Remember: the page title is the single biggest factor.
So how do you choose a good page title? The best way is to write in the words that you think people would most likely type to find your site. These words are known as keywords. There is a lot more you can do with keywords but for now that is something beyond the scope of this post.
For a less competitive market you can rank number one easily in Yahoo! just by setting the page title. So if you wanted to rank well for the term "baby shower gifts" then you would create your page title so that it appears as follows:
*TITLE*Baby Shower Gifts*/TITLE* (replace * with greater and less than characters)
In conclusion: Don't leave your page titles empty. If you do you are letting easily gained search engine visitors go to your competition.
