Homecoming Concert features renowned trumpet player
Date 10/11/2001 12:00 AM | Topic: NewsAdolph Bud Herseth, retired principal trumpet of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, will perform with the Luther College Concert Band Sunday, Oct. 14, at the Luther 2001 Homecoming Concert.
Herseth, a 1943 graduate of Luther, will be principal trumpet in the Concert Bands performance of Trumpeter's Lullaby by Leroy Anderson.
The New York Times has called Herseth "quite possibly the most dazzling player on his instrument in the world today," and his performances with the Chicago Symphony earned him international recognition and praise for his brilliant musicianship.
The 1:30 p.m. concert in the Luther Center for Faith and Life will feature performances by the Concert Band under the direction of Frederick Nyline, Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Daniel Baldwin and Nordic Choir under the direction of Weston Noble. The concert is open to the public with no charge for admission.
The concert finale will be John Philip Sousa's "Stars and Stripes Forever" performed by the Concert Band and Alumni Concert Band under the direction of Weston Noble.
During the concert, Luther College will name the students selected for the annual Carlo A. Sperati Awards and the Theodore Presser Award. Trumpet player Herseth has been hailed as one of the great masters of his art.
A native of Minnesota, he earned a college degree at Luther and during World War II served as a bandsman at the pre-flight school in Iowa and the U.S. Navy School of Music. He ended his military service in the South Pacific.
Herseth was appointed principal trumpet of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 1948 while studying for his master's degree at the New England Conservatory of Music. He has made numerous solo appearances with the Orchestra and with the CSO brass ensembles, as well as with ensembles and orchestras throughout the country.
He holds honorary doctor of music degrees from DePaul University, Luther College, the New England Conservatory of Music, Rosary College and Valparaiso University. The Chicago Symphony Orchestra has named the principal chair he occupied for more than five decades in his honor. Herseth received the Living Art of Music Symphonic Musician Award in 1994 and was honored as Instrumentalist of the Year by Musical America in 1995. In January 2000, he was honored by The Women's Association for completion of "one season plus five decades" as the CSO principal trumpet.
In June, Herseth will receive two prestigious awards. He will receive the American Symphony Orchestra League's Gold Baton Award, marking the first time in the League's history that the award is bestowed on an orchestra player, and London's esteemed Royal Academy of Music will award him an honorary membership at their commencement exercises.
